Google Talk Conference Bot

Source has been updated! See updates below.

----------

Welcome Diggers!

The original bot is up and running, add conferencebot@gmail.com to see what all of this is about.

----------

You guys are totally crashing our little bot, but the source is available below. If you know what to do with it, do it, and post some more clone bots in the comments!

The original is pretty much dead, but I have faith in you guys. Do it up.

Just heard about this from my buddy octav on irc.

Evidently this isn't the first, but somebody's running a bot on Google Talk which essentially creates a chat room for Talk users. A few folks seem to think this is Google's doing, although I can't see this having as much practical application as oh, say, actual rooms.

Still, it's fun.

To join in, just add conferencebot@gmail.com to your Talk friends list.

Update: This bot is user created, and the author has made the source available. Thanks, isomer!

Update #2: The Digg stampede has subsided, the bot is doing fine. Feel free to join up: conferencebot@gmail.com.

Update #3: After two nights of heated (and rapid!) development, isomer has released new code and put up some helpful documentation for newcomers. I'll leave the original links to v1.0 for posterity's sake, but if you plan on implementing a bot, you should start with the latest release, still open source.

Version 1.1 Source and Documentation:

http://coders.meta.net.nz/~perry/jabber/confbot.php

Version 1.0 Source:
Note: NOT recommended for implementation; only for those who are interested in how this started. If you would like to run a bot, please use Version 1.1.

cory got robbed

don't tell my mother this.

so, my friend cory was robbed at gunpoint last night, walking to slice of life. i'd been walking with him on 6th, but i stopped at friend's, and he was robbed on fifth & orange.

four guys total, i believe, with two guns between them, all chilling in a late-model SUV waiting for a victim.

this further encourages my feeling that establishments which prohibit concealed weapons (which is every bar and restaurant with an abc permit in NC) should be required to have a process to check a patrons weapon while they visit, allowing them to swap it out for a ticket like one would a coat.

other than that, i don't really know how to respond to this. when cory got back and told us, everyone seemed to get really angry more than anything else.

if they were poor people or something, at least one could somewhat understand the situation at least. But to be attacked by a group of friends in a new SUV, with guns, is just fucking insulting.

silly professor

i really don't like my editing professor.

i usually love all of my professors, with really only one notable exception out of four years of classes. even paula - for all her harsh grading, at least she fucking smiles at you when you say hello.

so, i notice in class on the first day that she has a tendency to talk down to students. this is kind of silly these days (i mean, kenneth was a student last semester and he's a teacher now...) but she looks a little old school so i tried to not be annoyed.

she also has a tendency to question every students' answers, either directly or through her tone and action, in a way that i can see could intimidate a person, especially someone with little to no editing experience. which is really supposed to be the basis of the class, which in fact is pretty much called "editing."

luckily she hasn't really done either of these things to me, because she embarassed herself trying to be a badass on the second day.

the class is held in a lab in the math department, of all places, with all of the systems setup with adobe and macromedia programs for us design kids. so, the first day of class she tells us that, if she's ever in there, we can come in and use the computers, particularly because they're still working on the actual English lab.

so, the second day, i show up ten minutes early. not to use indesign, or to do our (oh so crappy but that's another post) homework, but just to browse the net and check my mail. when i walk through the door i hear, "excuse me, we're having class in here." i still had my sunglasses on and the lights were low, so i stopped to remove them, thinking i mistakenly walked into another profs class. of course, it was her, so i said, "yeah, i just came to use the computers," since that's what she told us to do, "am i too early?"

"Oh, well just sit at the back," she says, "if you can be quiet." At this point the kids in the class are pretty much rolling their eyes at the inane bitchiness of this professor. so, five or six minutes later the class leaves and kids from my class start rolling in.

around the time we're supposed to start i hear, "This lab isn't open for anyone to come and use" i look up to see who she's talking to and catch her staring right at me.

"sorry," i say, "i didn't realize i was too early,"

"aahhhhh, there's another class in here after this."

"yeah, i think i'm in it," i say, getting a little pissed. then, looking over my shoulder at her, i say "but, if that's not ok i can just drop it."

"Oh no no no, that's not what i meant." silence.

"what, ahhh, what's your name?" she asks, obviously a little put off.

"james."

"james wha--" she breaks off midsentence, evidently deciding that she'd rather scan the entire list than ask me my last name. she finds me, and i confirm that i am me.

she actually went on to try and find something else to talk down to me about, but i think the laughter of the class at the whole thing made her hold off.

i just don't understand people like that. i mean, i love fucking with people, but i wasn't even messing with her! why would i mess with my professor, whom i'm going to have to see every week for three months? she reminded my of a teacher's assistant i once had who seemed to go out of her way to make people feel bad. i just thought it was funny.

she (the prof) reminds me of the ultra conservative mom from donnie darko. not donnie's mom, but the crazy one who is also a teacher.

Google Talk

It looks like Google's Jabber client is dropping tomorrow, but the servers are turned on tonight, and everyone from digg is on.

Point GAIM or another Jabber client to talk.google.com, set the resource as talk and login with your gmail account information.

God this is nerdiness at its height.

template

ironing out the template, sorry if you visited last night.

i made some changes that broke the CSS (mostly in IE) but got shanghai'd into going for sushi and couldn't fix it until today.

thanks for the heads up d. we need to hang out.

Photoshop

I've been getting back into photoshop, what with all the web work recently.

Playing is really a better term.

For instance, I happened upon this picture of Scott at graduation:

Using the eraser and a blank layer (i made mine red so i could see it), I removed the background, except for a dangling cable and a (troublesome) blind cord:

The cord was oddly shaped, so I ended up scrapping it and drawing in a line. You won't be able to tell in the finished piece.

From here it is very simple to import an image into the background layer, thus transforming the dull tech booth into:

A Japanese condo, or:

A Lunar lander. Scott will get a kick out of this.

New Template

New template.

I decided to sit down and teach myself CSS tonight.

What do you think? Everything seems to work so far. Let me know if something looks broken or weird.

More to come.

edit: i done wrote it in notepad too.

Watch Out phpBB

I've been running a forum on phpBB, mostly as a test, and to get some forum experience. You didn't know that? It's at forum.mymoustache.com. Nothing special, only two test posts, and I'm just now beginning to really feel comfortable customizing the thing.

It's been relatively straightforward for me, but quite a few people (including potential customers) that have been referred to the site were put off or confused by the interface or just the concept of a forum. Now, these aren't necessarily the most internet-savvy people, but they are somewhat representative of the market we're trying to reach with the new (super secret) site launching in the fall, so I've been looking at ways of simplifying the interface to eliminate what we don't need and keep what we do.

Which, considering I've just now figured out how to change the logo image on php pages, isn't likely to be accomplished by me, at least in phpBB.

Enter Vanilla.

Vanilla is another gpl (open source) forum package, freely available, and one that ditches a lot of the complications inherent in a jack of all trades like phpBB. Vanilla has a very simple interface (example) that actually presents the forum contents in a more usable way than traditional phpBB boards.

At first glance, the first thing I think of is Gmail - clean interface, sharp lines and edges, and tons of accessible information. The interface itself is fully customizable, including strong integration of CSS (with more on the way, evidently).

For users unfamiliar with traditional forums (read: non-nerds), this may be just the ticket; I intend to roll the forum over in the next week, and then we'll see what happens.

Google Instant Messenger - Screenshot Proof

I haven't seen this anywhere else, but I stumbled across a screenshot that claims to show an IM window containing a Google IM conversation between two (alpha) testers.

google im

The text of their conversation:

Test says: Testing alpha, oh the excitement.
You say: Welcome to Google IM!
Test says: Oh how I wish there were emoticons and avatars...
You say: Planned features :)

google im

Not sure of the origins of this, I found it on Flickr. Interesting considering the recent Meetroduction chatter.

5-20 Xbox Games on Xbox 360

IGN is running a story touting some new news from M$ regarding Xbox360 backwards compatibility. A continuation of the "some games" we've been hearing since e3, but still disappointing.
